In this lesson you will learn how to configure a virtual machine in VirtualBox.
Launch VirtualBox to open the VirtualBox Manager. Click the New button to create a new virtual machine. Click Next to continue past the welcome screen.
Give your new virtual machine a name, and set the operating system to Windows 2008 (64-bit). Click Next to continue.
Choose an amount of memory to give the virtual machine. This will depend on the specifications of your computer. Try to give the server minimum of 2Gb of memory, but give it more if you can. A good amount is 4Gb. Click Next to continue.
Choose to Create a new hard disk. Click Next to continue.
If you think you will be moving your virtual machine to another virtualization platform at a later time then choose the appropriate file type for that, otherwise VDI format is fine. Click Next to continue.
Leave the virtual hard disk set to Dynamically allocated to save on disk space. Click Next to continue.
Configure the hard disk size to be at least 40Gb. You can also choose another folder location to store the files if you wish. Click Next to continue.
If you’re happy with all of the details for the new virtual disk click Create.
Verify the details for the virtual machine and click Create again.
After the virtual machine has been created click the Settings button.
Select Network from the left hand side. By default the virtual machine has one adapter that is configured for NAT.
If you want your Exchange Server to be able to easily connect to the internet to send and receive emails then change this to Bridged Adapter so that it is connected directly to your LAN.
Caution: if you are doing this on your corporate/business network that you are not the administrator of then check with a network administrator or IT manager before you change this setting.
Next, select Shared Folders from the left hand side, then click on the Add button to add a new shared folder. This will make it easier to copy files to and from the virtual machine and your computer.
Choose a folder path such as C:Temp and tick the box to auto-mount it. Click OK to continue.
Next, select Storage from the left hand side. Click on the “Empty” CD-ROM device under the IDE Controller.
Next, click on the CD-ROM icon to the right hand side of the CD/DVD Drive.
Select Choose a virtual CD/DVD disk file.
Browse to the location where you saved your Windows Server 2008 R2 ISO file. Select the ISO file and click Open.
Click OK to close the virtual machine settings, and continue to the next lesson.
