A Breaking Change for all Android-based Teams Devices
On May 1, 2025, Microsoft announced with MC1066157 a breaking change for all Android-based Teams devices, including Microsoft Teams Room devices, Panels, Displays, and Teams IP Phones. Microsoft is moving the management of Android-based Teams devices from the legacy and end-of-life method Android Device Administrator to the Android Open Source Platform (AOSP) Management. To deal with the change, Teams Administrators must prepare some required policies in Microsoft Intune and also check and validate Conditional Access policies. If the changes aren’t made, Teams Android devices cannot log in after the automatic update installation.
Microsoft is not giving tenants the option to pause and postpone the rollout of the new update. According to the announcement, the new firmware, including AOSP, will be published to the Teams Admin Center (TAC) on May 15, 2025.

Required Changes for a Successful AOSP Rollout
For a successful migration to AOSP, administrators must check if there already exists an enrollment profile for Teams Android devices in Intune, and if not, create one.
When creating a new enrollment profile, it is important to give the profile a meaningful name, so it can be easily identified as related to AOSP Teams devices. Also, make sure that the option ‘For Microsoft Teams devices’ is enabled so that Teams Android devices automatically use the profile during device enrollment (Figure 1).
Depending on the current Conditional Access configuration, it could be necessary to also configure a Compliance policy for Android-based Teams devices, so the Android devices will be set as “Compliant”.

Testing the New AOSP Firmware
As mentioned above, Microsoft will release the new AOSP firmware to all tenants on May 15, 2025, and there is no way to pause or decline this update. I recommend that you manually deploy the AOSP firmware on some test devices before May 15. The new AOSP firmware should already be available in most tenants.
Rollout Strategy for Customers with Teams Meeting Room Pro license
Customers with a Teams Meeting Room Pro license can also define different update rings for the Microsoft Teams device update. The new AOSP firmware will first be deployed to Teams devices in the ‘Validation’-ring. After a delay of 15 days, the update will be deployed to devices in the ‘General’-ring. And devices in the ‘Final-ring will get the update 45 days after the update is available in the ‘Validation’-ring.
